The Indian subsidiary of German car manufacturer – Volkswagen India – on Tuesday launched its much-awaited luxury sedan Passat with an introductory price of Rs 29.99 lakh for its 2.0L Tdi AT Comfortlin variant and Rs 32.99 lakh for 2.0L Tdi AT Highline variant (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). The Passat will be available in six colours across all Volkswagen showrooms along with test drives and bookings. The car was first showcased at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
Launching the New Passat, Steffen Knapp, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India said, “The Passat is renowned world over for its sheer performance, iconic style & rich heritage. We will now have a portfolio with remarkable carlines across leading vehicle segments in the country.”
Mechanically, the new generation Volkswagen Passat will draw power from the 2-litre TDI four-cylinder diesel engine tuned to produce 174 bhp, while paired to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. There's no manual transmission on offer. Sadly, due to the current taxation structure in India, Volkswagen will not be bringing in the plug-in hybrid version of the Passat yet, but it is on the cards. This new luxury sedan also offers a fuel efficiency of 17.42 kmpl (as per ARAI) and a fuel tank that offers a capacity of 66 litres.
“We are happy to bring back one of our most successful premium luxury products to the Indian market – the Volkswagen Passat. With the introduction of the Passat, we extend our portfolio, encompassing a wide variety of products from a hatchback to a luxury sedan," he added.
When compared to its previous generation, the car is 2mm shorter, however, the wheelbase has gone up by 79mm. Volkswagen says that new Passat has more cabin and boot space than the previous generation car. Volkswagen has also managed to shave off 80kg when compared to the car it replaces.
The eight generation Passat, which will compete with the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Skoda Superb, will come with features like Park Assist, Heads up Display unit and LED headlamps with signature DRLS.
