You must have heard about the Three Gorges Dam built over the Yangtze river in China. Beside being world’s largest dam and producing energy worth 15 nuclear power plants, it has many other feathers on its cap. The dam stores around 40 cubic kilometres of water weighing over 40 billion tonnes. But a mass of such volume has a visible effect on earth’s rotation. Even though small, it is noticeable. The day has been 0.06 microseconds longer than before. Even the positions of poles has been altered by around 2cm.
