Paolo Rossi is known the world over as the hero who helped Italy lift the 1982 soccer World Cup in Spain. What is not so well known is that Rossi could not play soccer for two years till April, 1982. Rossi, who used to play for the Italian club Perugia was banned for two years from April 1980 for his role in fixing a match between rival clubs Perugia and Avellino. When the ban was lifted in 1982, the striker was recalled to the Italian national team. All his transgressions were forgiven when Rossi scored six goals as Azzurri captured the World Cup for the third time.
