An alert police constable has foiled a daring bank robbery attempt in Jaipur. Had it not been for the vigilant cop, robbers, numbering over a dozen, would have decamped with hundreds of crores of rupees from Axis Bank’s chest branch in Ashok Nagar. Some reports put the cash available at the bank at Rs 925 crore.
In the wee hours of Tuesday, robbers reached the bank in an SUV. In a chilling CCTV video, they are seen jumping over an iron gate to enter the bank premises. Yogesh Dadhich, DCP, Jaipur South, said the intruders, 4 or 5 of whom were armed with handguns and iron rods, overpowered the guard at the entrance and tried to open the shutter gate.
“Then they managed to open one more gate of the bank. While they were trying to open the third gate, the noise alerted the police constable who was inside,” said Dadhich.
Sitaram, the constable, told television channels later that when he saw the men trying to break open the door, he called them out which made them move back a little. “I fired in the air which scared them and they fled the spot,” said Sitaram.
The constable also raised an alarm following which more cops reached the spot. The police control room and the wireless office were intimated soon, following which the place was barricaded.
A case of attempt to dacoity has been registered against unidentified persons. “We have been unable to identify the men till now as they were masked. The number of their car is also not clear from the CCTV footages. But we’re trying to draw a route map of their vehicle which will provide us some clue,” said the DCP.
Dadhich further said the bank had flouted RBI security norms, as no alarm went off even after two gates were opened.
The police also informed that it was a centralised chest branch where money is collected and then sent to various branches across the state. So it seems the robbers were aware of the amount of cash available there on that particular day, meaning it was a pre-planned act.
