Hollywood star Salma Hayek, one of the innumerable women who came forward last year to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment, believes disgraced producer only responded to her and Lupita Nyongo’s claims because women of colour are the easiest to get discredited.

Detained director gets standing ovation

A new film by the enfant terrible of Russian theatre — who is under house arrest in Moscow — received a standing ovation and rave reviews on Thursday after it was shown at the Cannes film festival. The cast of Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Leto,” a fast-paced biopic of the Soviet-Korean rock legend Viktor Tsoi, were cheered as the movie premiered at the world’s top film festival. #MeToo will not sway Cannes film contest: Jury head Blanchett

The “MeToo” campaign for sexual equality will have “no direct impact” on who wins at the Cannes Film Festival, Cate Blanchett, the head of this year’s majority-female jury, said.

Of the 21 films vying for the Palme d’Or, only three are directed by women, the same as last year’s festival which happened before the sexual abuse and harassment allegations that gave birth to a global campaign to get greater female participation in the film business.

Starry Affair

Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor on Tuesday tied the knot with long-time beau Anand Ahuja, a Delhi-based businessman, in a traditional Anand Karaj ceremony that was attended by family members and close friends from the Hindi film industry. True to her image of a fashionista, Sonam looked radiant in a red and golden Anuradha Vakil lehenga choli. The floral attire matched the bride’s blush, while the heavy jewellery elevated her royal look. Ahuja opted for beige bandhgala by Raghavendra Rathore. The couple got married in the Sikh ceremony at Sonam’s maternal aunt’s bungalow in Bandra.

Cannes golden couple return to open festival

It was where Javier Bardem memorably declared his love for Penelope Cruz in 2010. Now the golden couple of Spanish cinema will open this year’s Cannes film festival together on Tuesday.

The Oscar-winning actors both star in Iranian master Asghar Farhadi’s Spanish psychological thriller “Everybody Knows,” which will kick off the festival and is up for the top Palme d’Or prize.

HALF-TIME hysteria

It is just past half-time in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is that stage where the initial enthusiasm has died down for most owners, and they have to really pump themselves up on each match day, and some actually dread going to the stadium with their entourage to witness another defeat. They, and their money managers, are counting the value they have got for the crores they splurged on superstars, big names, rookies and unknowns. This midway stage is a nightmare for the owners of teams which are not doing well, and those which are almost there, but still far away from the playoffs.
