HDK unveils Rs 34K cr farm loan waiver scheme

Keeping his pre-poll promise, newly sworn-in Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy (in pic) on Thursday announced a farm loan waiver of a mammoth scale of Rs 34,000 crore. This waiver will benefit close to 30 lakh farming families that have crop loans of up to Rs 2 lakh.

Gen Dalbir Singh tipped to be next J&K governor

The Modi government’s choice of new governor for Jammu and Kashmir seems to have narrowed down to former army chief Dalbir Singh (in pic). Incumbent governor NN Vohra has been at the helm of affairs in the troubled state since 2008.

Vohra, 82, was appointed by the UPA government and the Modi government continued with him. His term ends with the Amarnath Yatra, which is taking place amid elaborate security cover.

Interfaith couple’s passports cleared, probe says Lucknow official exceeded brief

An internal government probe has found that a Lucknow passport officer and the police exceeded their brief, asking irrelevant questions from an interfaith couple whose travel documents have now been approved. “The passports of Tanvi Seth and Anas Siddiqui (see pic) have been cleared,” Regional Passport Officer (RPO) Piyush Verma said on Wednesday.

Unsecured bank loans rise four-times in FY15-18

Banks’ unsecured loan bo­ok has grown four times the bank credit during the past 3 years, helped by a rise in discretionary spending, tec­hnology-driven disburseme­nts and lower interest rates, says a report.

Unsecured loans are the loans where individual exposures are smaller and more distributed and given without any collaterals but banks get higher margins. Typically personal loan, education lo­ans and credit card spends fall under this category.

Kerala allots 2 seat quota in colleges, varsities for transgenders

Transgender students will now get reservation in universities and affiliated colleges in Kerala. The state government has issued an order reserving two additional seats exclusively for TG members in all courses in universities and affiliated arts and science colleges in the state. The admission of TGs in the reserved seats would be subject to the fulfilment of qualification, the order issued by the Higher Education Department said.

Lucknow varsity shut after attack on teachers

Lucknow University was closed on Wednesday till further orders after a group of students protesting over admission to the new academic session attacked teachers, injuring over a dozen of them. LU vice chancellor SP Singh said the youths claimed they were from the Samajwadi Party.
