According to the ISMA, mills produced 33.16 million tonne of sugar during the 2018-19 marketing year, of which sales were 25.5 million tonne.

ISMA had made a preliminary estimate of 28.2 million tonnes of sugar production for the 2019-20 marketing year.

The Centre had announced this loan package in two tranches -- first in June 2018 amounting to Rs 4,440 crore and the other in March 2019 of Rs 10,540 crore.

The objective was to help millers in clearing cane arrears and divert surplus sugar for ethanol manufacturing.

Interestingly, Gadkari, had, last week, said that he had cleared a Cabinet note on the proposed vehicle scrappage policy, which had been approved by the finance ministry as well.

Already we have signed an agreement with KfW for green energy in MSMEes. I will try to convince them to finance sugar mills proposal and we will find out a mechanism with the petroleum ministry for this, said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said land of the sugar mills can be utilised for ethanol production from sugar.

Mills have exported almost an equal amount of raw and white sugar for which the top four destinations are Bangladesh, Iran, Sri Lanka and Somalia, Vithalani said.
