First Drive: Volvo’s all new small SUV aiming to be volume grosser

After introducing Volvo's flagship sports utility vehicle, the XC90 in the country a couple of years ago, the Swedish luxury carmaker is in a rush to expand its market share in the fiercely competitive luxury car market in the country.

It believes that the all new small SUV, the Volvo XC40, which has all what it takes to be a volume grosser, will drive sales in Asia’s third biggest car market.

Acute summer hits 91 major reservoirs

Even as the Himachal Pradesh government devises a strategy to prevent last week’s infamous Shimla water crisis, an acute summer this year has dried up 91 major reservoirs across the country to below the ten-year average. The water storage level across 91 major hydro reservoirs in India plummeted to 17 per cent last week, lower than the 21 per cent storage recorded last year at the same time.

It is below also the last ten years average storage of 19 per cent, the latest weekly fresh reservoir storage data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) showed on May 31.

Shimla water shortage foretells India crisis story

Shimla, a popular hill station retreat in northern India, reeling under a severe water crisis, has also revealed depleting reservoir levels of 91 major dams across the country, indicating perilous ground water situation in Asia’s third biggest economy.

The situation was so acute in Shimla that it forced the state authorities to temporarily shut schools and even suspend an officer for negligence.

The hill station had no water supply for nearly eight days, and water tankers carried drinking water to residents.

Bentley drives in Bentayga V8 at Rs 3.78 crore

Bentley, the British ultra-luxury carmaker, has launched the new Bentayga V8 in the Indian market at a staggering price starting at Rs 3.78 crore at Mumbai showroom.

The imported luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) will be sold via Exclusive Motors, the official Bentley Motors partner in the country.

The Bentayga V8’s closest rival will be the soon-to-be-launched 2018 Range Rover SV Autobiography facelift, and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which will also be launched in India later in 2018.

The new model would be available on order in the country.

Bhima-Koregaon violence: Pune Police make 5 arrests

The Pune Police on Wednesday arrested five people allegedly having close Maoist links, including prominent Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence on January 1.

According to sources in the Pune Police, Dhawale was arrested from his house in Mumbai, lawyer Surendra Gadling, activist Mahesh Raut and Shoma Sen were picked up from Nagpur and Rona Wilson was arrested from his flat in Munirka in Delhi in simultaneous raids on Wednesday morning.

Rising use of plastics in farm sector bad for crop, land: WOTR

The Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), a Pune-based non-profit group, has warned the government ab­o­ut rising use of plastics in agriculture. It has suggested alternative natural materials obtained from plants, anim­als, and new generation bio­polymers, which are plastics made from biomass sources.

While lauding the gover­nment’s efforts banning single use plastics and enforcing penalties for non-compliance, WOTR has urged action that goes beyond bans and prevent contamination of soil, water, food and air.

Tata Motors maps turnaround for 2019

Tata Motors, India’s biggest commercial vehicle maker by sales, has planned out its growth trajectory to take on competitors such as Ashok Leyland, Mahindra and Mahindra and Eicher Motors in Asia’s third biggest economy.

The Mumbai-based automaker is determined to both defend its leadership and increase volume sales and market share in a very competitive commercial vehicles space in the world’s fourth largest vehicle market.

Mahindra Logistics eyes 20% growth this year

Mahindra Logistics, one of India’s largest multimodal logistics service providers, is targeting over 20 per cent growth this financial year on the back of transportation business picking up across India post-GST.

“We are aiming at more than 20 per cent growth in our logistics business this year with the overall business growing post-GST,” Pirojshaw Sarkari, CEO at Mahindra Logistics told Financial Chronicle.

Sonalika tractor to develop R&D facility in NCR

Sonalika International Tractors, India’s third largest tractor maker by sales, is investing Rs 200 crore to set up a new research and development (R&D) facility in the national capital region (NCR) to double its annual sales to two lakh tractors over the next five years.

The Delhi-based tractor major will be hiring over 150 designers and domain experts for the new R&D centre, which is expected to be fully functional in the next two years.

Maruti aims to sell over 2 lakh cars with automatic gear tech this fiscal

Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest carmaker by sales, which has crossed the three-lakh cumulative sales mark of automatic cars with the auto gearshift technology, is planning to sell over two-lakh automatic cars in the ongoing fiscal year.

The popular brand, with 50 per cent market share in the country, had first introduced the auto gear shift system with the Celerio model in 2014, and since then the company’s sale of AMT models has tripled in India, Asia’s third largest car mart.
