MG claims that the Hector’s petrol-manual hybrid variant is capable of returning 15.81kmpl. Let’s put that to the test, shall we?

The petrol-hybrid variant of Hector was unable to meet its claimed fuel efficiency figures in neither the city nor on the highway.
The petrol-hybrid variant of Hector was unable to meet its claimed fuel efficiency figures in neither the city nor on the highway.

The MG Hector is available with a choice of three engines. It includes a pair of 1.5-litre petrol turbocharged engines, out of which one is a hybrid unit. Also on offer is a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel and all of them are available with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard.

We recently got our hands on the petrol-MT hybrid variant of the Hector and took it through our fuel efficiency test. Here are the engine details and the results we achieved:

Engine

1451cc

Power

143PS

Torque

250Nm

Transmission

6-speed MT

Claimed Fuel Efficiency

15.81kmpl

Tested Fuel Efficiency (city)

9.36kmpl

Tested Fuel Efficiency (highway)

14.44kmpl

Here’s how the MG Hector petrol-hybrid performs in mixed driving conditions:

Mileage

City:Highway (50:50)

City:Highway (25:75)

City:Highway (75:25)

Petrol Hybrid

11.35kmpl

12.71kmpl

10.26kmpl

The petrol-hybrid variant of Hector was unable to meet its claimed fuel efficiency figures in neither the city nor on the highway. In the city, the MG Hector’s petrol variant took a beating as its fuel efficiency was a significant 6.45kmpl lower than the claimed figure. However, things improved on the highway but it still was 1.37kmpl lower than the claimed figure. It is important to keep in mind that while the claimed figures are recorded under controlled environment, we conduct our tests on actual roads with traffic.

In case you use the Hector petrol-hybrid for travelling outside the city, expect an average efficiency figure of around 12.71kmpl. On the other hand, if your regular drive is limited to the city, then the hybrid variant will deliver around 10.26kmpl. And if your daily drive is almost equally divided inside the city and on the highways, then expect it to return around 11.35 kmpl.

Finally, it is important to note that the fuel efficiency is a combination of driving conditions, car condition and driving style and hence, your experience may vary from ours. If you are a Hector owner, then feel free to share your findings with us and fellow owners in the comments below.
