The 30-share Sensex was trading 218.82 points, or 0.54 per cent, higher at 41,108.05.
After touching its record intra-day high of 40,931.71, Sensex ended 529.82 points, or 1.31 per cent, higher at 40,889.23.

Markets would also be influenced by factors such as rupee-dollar trend, oil prices and investment pattern by overseas investors.
Coal India Ltd, Hindalco Industries and NMDC are among the major companies set to announce their earnings this week.
After hitting a record intra-day high of 40,688.27, Sensex ended 183.96 points, or 0.45 per cent higher at 40,653.74.
The broader NSE Nifty briefly reclaimed the 12,000 level, before finishing at 11,966.05, showing a gain of 48.85 points, or 0.41 per cent.
After swinging 413 points during the session, the 30-share Sensex settled 53.73 points, or 0.13 per cent, lower at 40,248.23.
With no major events due this week, market will focus on the next leg of corporate result announcements, said Vinod Nair of Geojit.
The broader NSE Nifty too advanced 13.15 points, or 0.11 per cent, to close at 11,890.60.
